Construction Process

How We Build Walls That Don't Fail

90% of retaining wall failures are caused by poor drainage and shallow bases. We over-engineer what happens behind and beneath the wall.

01Step

Base Trenching

We dig a trench below the frost line and heavily compact a dense aggregate base. The first row of block is buried entirely underground for structural lock.

02Step

Drainage Installation

We install a perforated drain pipe wrapped in fabric directly behind the base of the wall, giving ground water a clear exit path.

03Step

Stacking & Geogrid

As we stack the blocks, we interlock heavy-duty geogrid mesh between the layers and bury it deep into the hillside to tie the wall to the earth.

04Step

Clean Stone Backfill

We fill the entire space behind the wall with clear, crushed stone (not dirt). This prevents water pressure from building up and pushing the wall over.

Wall Planning

Crucial Retaining Wall Factors

Building a wall requires assessing soil types, water loads, and height limits to ensure long-term stability.

The Hidden Enemy: Hydrostatic Pressure

Wet soil is incredibly heavy. If water cannot drain through the wall, the pressure will eventually snap the blocks. Backfilling with stone is mandatory.

Wall Height Limits

In most NY municipalities, walls over 3 to 4 feet tall require an engineer's stamp and a building permit. We can handle this engineering coordination.

Terracing vs. One Massive Wall

Instead of one intimidating 6-foot wall, it is often safer and more attractive to build two 3-foot terraced walls with a planting bed in between.

Block Style

We offer heavily textured split-face blocks for a rugged look, or smooth, modern dimensional blocks for a contemporary aesthetic.

Enhance Your Wall Project

A retaining wall doesn't just have to be functional; it can be a beautiful focal point.

  • Incorporate winding staircases directly through the wall
  • Add under-cap hardscape lighting to illuminate the stone texture
  • Build decorative pillars at the ends of the wall
  • Top terraced walls with lush landscaping and trailing vines

Frequently Asked Questions

Retaining Wall FAQs

Why is my current retaining wall leaning forward?

It is likely failing due to hydrostatic pressure. The original builder probably backfilled the wall with dirt instead of crushed stone. When it rains, the dirt absorbs water, expands, and pushes the wall over.

Can you replace a rotting wood retaining wall?

Yes. We excavate the old, rotting railroad ties or landscape timbers and replace them with permanent concrete segmental blocks that will never rot or be eaten by insects.

Do I need a permit to build a retaining wall?

It depends on the height and your local township. Generally, decorative walls under 36 inches do not require permits, but structural walls supporting driveways or exceeding 4 feet always do.

What is a freestanding seating wall?

Unlike retaining walls that hold back dirt, freestanding walls have two finished faces and are built around patios and fire pits to provide permanent, maintenance-free guest seating.
