Construction Process

How We Build Unshakeable Stairs

The geometry of a staircase must be perfect. We meticulously calculate the rise and run to ensure the steps feel natural and safe to walk on.

01Step

Base Excavation

We dig a deep foundation pad at the base of the stairs, filling it with compacted aggregate to prevent the bottom steps from sinking.

02Step

Block Core Construction

We build the skeleton of the stairs using heavy, interlocking retaining wall blocks, creating a solid, unmoving core.

03Step

Tread Installation

We apply masonry adhesive and set the treads (the part you step on)—typically heavy natural stone, limestone, or bullnose pavers.

04Step

Lighting & Finishing

If requested, we wire discrete LED hardscape lights under the lip of each tread before sealing the joints.

Staircase Design

Crucial Stair Planning Details

Steps must comply with building codes and human ergonomics. Poorly planned steps are awkward and dangerous.

Consistent Rise and Run

Every step in a flight must be the exact same height (rise) and depth (run). Even a half-inch variation will cause people to trip.

Tread Overhang

We design a slight overhang (nosing) on each step, which looks elegant and creates a perfect shadow line for under-tread lighting.

Water Shedding

Each step must have a virtually imperceptible forward pitch (1/8 inch) so rain and melting snow run off rather than forming ice slicks.

Cheek Walls

For taller staircases, we build bordering cheek walls to contain the soil, act as a safety barrier, and provide a mounting point for handrails.

Popular Staircase Upgrades

Frequently Asked Questions

Outdoor Stairs & Steps FAQs

Can you put stone or pavers over my existing concrete steps?

Sometimes, if the concrete is in perfect structural condition and just ugly. However, if the concrete is sinking or severely cracked, we must demolish it and rebuild from scratch, otherwise the new stone will just crack with the old concrete.

What is the best material for steps in the winter?

Solid natural stone slabs or high-density concrete blocks are best. They are heavy, resist salt damage better than poured concrete, and offer excellent traction.

Do I need a handrail?

Local building codes typically require a graspable handrail for any staircase with three or more steps (or exceeding a certain height). We coordinate with metal fabricators to install stylish, code-compliant rails.

How long does it take to rebuild front steps?

A standard set of front entry steps usually takes 3 to 5 days, including demolition of the old steps and construction of the new masonry.
