Installation Process

How We Prep and Finish Beds

Dumping new mulch over weeds and old mulch looks terrible in a month. We prep the beds properly before applying the final finish.

01Step

Bed Cleanup

We remove sticks, leaves, and pull existing weeds to create a clean slate.

02Step

Deep Edging

We use mechanical edgers or hand spades to cut a deep, crisp 'V' trench around the perimeter, keeping grass out and mulch in.

03Step

Weed Barrier (Stone Only)

If installing decorative stone, we pin down a heavy woven geotextile fabric to block weeds and prevent the stone from sinking into the mud.

04Step

Spreading & Detailing

We apply the mulch or stone at a proper 2-3 inch depth, keeping it pulled back slightly from tree trunks and house siding to prevent rot.

Material Selection

Choosing the Right Ground Cover

The material you choose impacts plant health, maintenance time, and the overall style of your home.

Dyed vs. Natural Mulch

Dyed mulches (black/brown) hold their color longer and pop against green plants. Natural mulch fades faster but is preferred for sensitive organic gardens.

The Danger of Mulch Volcanoes

Piling mulch high against the trunk of a tree (a 'mulch volcano') causes bark rot and kills the tree. We apply mulch properly in a flat donut shape.

Stone Size

Large river rock (1-3 inches) stays in place perfectly. Pea gravel is beautiful but tends to migrate into the lawn if not contained by a rigid border.

Weed Fabric Limitations

Weed fabric is mandatory under stone, but we never recommend it under mulch. As mulch breaks down into dirt on top of the fabric, weeds will just grow in that new dirt layer.

Complementary Services

Combine a bed refresh with these services for a total property makeover.

  • Trimming and reshaping overgrown shrubs
  • Planting new perennials and boxwoods
  • Installing a cobble stone border instead of a cut-dirt edge
  • Power washing adjacent walkways

Frequently Asked Questions

Mulch & Stone FAQs

How thick should mulch be applied?

Mulch should be maintained at a depth of 2 to 3 inches. Any deeper can suffocate plant roots and invite mold; any thinner won't block weeds or retain moisture.

Does dyed mulch bleed in the rain?

Freshly dyed mulch needs about 24 hours of dry weather to cure. If it rains heavily immediately after spreading, some dye may wash out onto adjacent sidewalks, but it usually washes away quickly.

Will installing stone completely stop weeds?

It stops weeds from coming up from the dirt below. However, over time, dust and debris blow into the rocks, creating a thin layer of soil where weed seeds can germinate on top of the fabric. Occasional spraying is still required.

Can you deliver the mulch and let me spread it?

We are a full-service installation company. We do not offer material-only drop-offs. Our pricing includes the material, delivery, and professional installation.
