Installation Process

How We Design and Install Lighting

Proper lighting is an art. We focus on hiding the light source and highlighting the feature, avoiding the 'airport runway' look.

01Step

Nighttime Design Plan

We evaluate your property's focal points—stone walls, large trees, and architectural peaks—to create a balanced lighting layout.

02Step

Trenching & Wire Routing

We safely bury heavy-gauge, low-voltage wire under mulch beds and lawns, hiding the infrastructure completely.

03Step

Fixture Placement

We install the brass fixtures, angling them precisely to cast the perfect shadows and avoid shining light into windows.

04Step

Transformer Setup

We mount a commercial-grade transformer, set the timers or photocells (dusk-to-dawn sensors), and test the system.

Design Considerations

Lighting Techniques We Use

Different features require different lighting techniques to look their best.

Uplighting

Placing a spotlight at the base of a tree or column and pointing it upward to highlight texture and height.

Downlighting (Moonlighting)

Mounting lights high in a tree pointing downward to cast gentle, natural-looking shadows through the branches.

Path Lighting

Using staggered, hooded fixtures to cast pools of light on walkways, ensuring safe footing without blinding pedestrians.

Hardscape Lighting

Hiding tiny LED strips under the lips of steps or seating walls to create a floating, glowing effect on the stonework.

Smart Lighting Control

Modern systems give you complete control from the palm of your hand.

  • Control zones and brightness directly from a smartphone app
  • Set schedules that adjust automatically with the sunset
  • Change LED colors for holidays or game days (on compatible systems)
  • Integrate with smart home systems like Alexa or Google Home

Frequently Asked Questions

Landscape Lighting FAQs

Are solar lights just as good as wired lights?

No. Solar lights are dim, unreliable on cloudy days, and their plastic housings break quickly in winter. Low-voltage wired systems provide brilliant, consistent, reliable light 365 days a year.

Will installing lights tear up my lawn?

Not at all. Low-voltage wire only needs to be buried a few inches deep. We use a specialized trenching spade that slices the grass, drops the wire in, and folds the grass back seamlessly.

How much does it cost to run landscape lights?

Very little. Because we use ultra-efficient LED bulbs, an entire property's lighting system often uses less electricity than a single old incandescent porch bulb.

Can you add lights to my existing patio?

Adding path lights in the mulch around the patio is easy. However, retrofitting under-cap hardscape lights into an existing glued-down retaining wall is very difficult. Hardscape lighting should always be installed during the initial construction.
